Loss of Life
Sixteen persons in Ambathur Taluk, twelve persons
in
Ponneri Taluk and one person in Uthukottai Taluk werereported dead. An
immediate relief of
Rs. 1,00,000/- from the Chief Minister's Public Relief
Fund and all the next kin of the deceased numbering 29 have been given Chief
Minister's Public Relief
Fund immediately. The following table shows the details

Destitute Widow Pension
The following four widows were found eligible for
sanction of Destitute Widow Pension, and hence
DWP sanctioned at the
rate of Rs. 200/ each per month.

Missing
Twentyeight persons were reported missing. Out of this
twentyeight persons sixteen persons have been identified as dead and relief
to the
next kin of the deceased have been given by the respective District
and as of now twelve persons were reported missing.
Relief
Packages
1. Immediate relief package of Rs.4,000/-
in cash one saree, one dhoti,
two bedsheets, 60 Kgs.
of rice
and 3 litres of kerosene to each of
the affected
families.
2. As per the terms of the GO., 4119 families
have been identified, 2543
families
in Ambathur
Taluk and
1576 families in Ponneri Taluk have been given the relief
package. Collector and
the
District Revenue Officer at all levels in
the presence of the
elected members of
the
legislative
assembly ie. MLAs of Ponneri and Tiruvottiyur.
3. The State Government have
sanctioned Rs.
2,000/- in cash, one saree, one
dhoti,
two bedsheets, 60
Kgs. of rice and 3 litres of
kerosene to the
families whose lovelihood
have been affected by loss of wages in Tsunami. As per the terms
of this
GO.,
12883
families have been identified,
4193 families in Ambathur Taluk, 6322
families in
Ponneri
Taluk and 2368 families
in Gummidipoondi
Taluk.
4. The fishermen and other families living along the coastal areas
in Gummidipoondi Taluk
have also
became eligible. Hence the fishermen and other affected persons
have been
identified in Ambathur, Ponneri
and Gummidipoondi Taluks. The total number of families
affected were 12,850.
5. All the affected
families who have received the relief packages sanctioned previously
were eligible to the relief. Hence the
fishermen and other affected persons have been
identified in Ambathur, Ponneri and Gummidipoondi Taluks. Total
number of families
benefitted were
16,976.

| Loss of Fishing Implements: To ascertain the damage caused to traditional fishing crafts viz. catamarans and fiber boats four teams have been formed to ascertain the beneficences of the claims, three for Ambattur Taluk and one for Ponneri Taluk. The Director of Fisheries / Manageing Director, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation Limited, Chennai have sent the officials of fisheries department to coordinate with the Revenue department to ascertain the damages caused to the catamarans in Ambattur & Ponneri Taluk. As per the team's reports, the proposal have been sent to the Fisheries Department and the relief distribution as follows: |

Agriculture
Department
As no agriculture lands were
affected and no agriculturist has been affected
due to Tsunami, no relief
was granted to the farmers in this District.
Housing
Initially 213 temporary houses have been proposed for
families who have been rendered homeless as detailed below:
1.
For Ponneri Taluk, 13 houses constructed by the
Block Development Officer, Minjur.
2. For Ambathu Taluk, 200 houses
constructed by
the Executive Engineer, PWD,
Tiruvallur.

In addition to temporary houses constructed in this site, the Corporation of Chennai has constructed houses for the occupation of the Tsunami victims of Chennai District. The entire 2142 temporary houses have been handed over to Thiruvottiyur Municipality for the provision of Civic Amenities such as street light, sanitation, etc., and was looked after by the Thiruvottiyur Municipality. The temporary tenemants have been devasted by two fire accidents on 23.06.2005 and 28.06.2005. All the heads of the affected families have been given cash dole etc., They were taken to the near by Kalyanamandapams and given fred. The land in T.S. No. 2/1 and 2/3 in the Thiruvottiyur village which is now in the possession of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board in as extent of 7.28.5 Hectares have been proposed to be utilised for constructing temporary shelters, for these people, and preparation of the site for handing over to the NGOs for construction of houses is being done by the PWD department. The removal of bushed, levelling of the land, construction of compound wall etc., are in progress. |

Role of Social Welfare
Department
The social welfare department is providing counceling on Psycho
Social support
to the Tsunami affected people. They have conducted training
programme on 01.03.2005
and 02-03-2005 at Minjur in which they
emphasised the prepardness to face calamities.
The department also
identified NRI's and the NRIs have finalised to provide seven boats
each
costing 1.5 lakhs. These boats will serve 34 families. A boy of eight years old
who
was living with his parents ar Vanagaram Village, Ambathur Taluk has
been orphaned by the
Tsunami has been identified.
