Brief Description about the Department

Public Library Department comes under School Educational Department. The local library authority, Tiruvallur is established on 08.08.1997. In Tiruvallur District there is one District Central Library at Tiruvallur, 65 Branch Libraries, 46 Village Libraries and 15 Part Time Libraries all over Tiruvallur District.

Main Source of Income
The Local bodies are remitted 10% of property tax to the Local Library Authority. It is the prime revenue of the department. The Library cess collected from the Local bodies are utilized to development activities of the department, such as purchase of books and periodical. Construction of New Library buildings, Special repair of branch Libraries, purchase of Tools and plants and purchase of forms and register.

Internet Browsing facilities are available in District Central Library, Tiruvallur, Ponneri, Manavalanagar, Tiruttani, Pallipattu Ambattur, Redhills and Thiruvottiyur Branch Library
Condition for Opening of New Library |
|
1. To enroll 200 members
2. To enroll 2 Patrons
3. To Donate furniture worth Rs.2000
4. Hand over rent free building to Local Library Authority for functioning of Library till the construction of new library building.
5. To register 5 cent Vacant land to Local Library Authority for Construction of a library building.
After fulfilling the above condition, a part time library will be opened at first instance.
Opening of New Village Libraries
In the year 2008 - 2009, the following village libraries are opened and functioning effectively.

Upgradation of Libraries
As per G.O.Ms.No.317, School Education Department dt.15.12.2010, the following village libraries are upgraded as branch library.
1. Thumbikulam - 11.01.2011
2. Bavani Nagar - 11.01.2011
Library Building
In Local Library Authority, Tiruvallur among 65 Branch libraries, 58 Libraries are functioning own building, 5 libraries are functioning in rent free building, 2 libraries are functioning rented building.
Xerox machine facilities
Xerox machine facilities are available in District Central Library Tiruvallur, Ambattur, Manavalanagar, Valasaravakkam, Tiruttani, Pothaturpet, Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, Porur and Redhills Branch Library. It is very useful to the members as well as the civil service aspirants.
Vaghuparai Noolagam

To develop the reading habit from the student level, Public Libraries Department have introduced new scheme namely Vaghuparai Noolagam. According to this scheme 100 books are given to the nearby Middle, High School by the libraries twice in a month by rotation basis. Now 91 schools are adopted by the in this scheme. Nearly 45,256 Students are benefited
